Youngtown

Youngtown, AMERICA'S FIRST RETIREMENT COMMUNITY, was established in 1954. Other "firsts" include 1960 incorporation for retirement communities, and also 1960, AARP Chapter 1. A rustic log cabin, where the Historical Society maintains town history, is located within the government complex and is open to residents and visitors.

Youngtown was established on a dairy ranch bought be developer Ben Schleifer, who pioneered the concept of retirement living with age restrictions. In 1998, the age restriction was lifted, making Youngtown available to all ages. Youngtown, which has no town property tax or school taxes, still provides a tranquil, small-town lifestyle at minimum expense. The current population is 6,163.

Youngtown offers a broad range of community facilities including a library, a clubhouse, five parks, a cactus garden and a lake. For those with a wide variety of interests, clubs and organizations abound. Retirement/Assisted Living facilities are available in the town. There are over 200 businesses and services.

An annexation will allow the town to add new housing in the future. A staff of 25 supports the Town Hall, Police Department, Public Works Department, Library, and Court facilities.
